Power Amplifiers - What To Look For?

An amplifier is a device that converts low energy signals into high energy signals of the same type. A power amplifier is assigned as a last one in a transmittal chain of a stage that distinctly requires much attention to the power ratio.

There are few factors to be considered while choosing a power amplifier. The first thing to be checked is the power itself. The norm is to choose one that has the capacity to deliver power equal to twice the speakers' IEC power. This means that a speaker, in 8 Ohm loads and power rating of 350W will require an amplifier of 700W in the same 8 Ohm load. Ideally for a speaker, for a load of 8 Ohm, the power efficiency should be 700W.

The next factor to be considered is the headroom. A professional and good quality loudspeaker can deal transient peaks which is excess of its power rated, if it can bear the same peaks without aberration. Using an amplifier with a little extra headroom will help making certain that only pure, undistorted power gets into the speakers. Some professional ones with good quality are designed for having additional headroom. They can purely produce transient peaks that surmount their power rated. In such a case, a model with an output rating power equal to the uninterrupted IEC power of the speaker is to be selected. It is also better to consult the manufacturer or check out the owners' manual to know more.

The next main thing to be checked is the budget that is in mind; the more the power, the greater the cost. If budget is a constraint and a less powered amplifier is bought, it must be noted that it does not get into clipping. Also, if the power that flows into the loudspeakers is less than what is required into it, then it can also damage the loudspeaker or the system, apart from creating unpleasant hearing due to the distortion that is caused due to it.

It is very important to check out the right type of amplifier for the system, and accordingly buy one, as otherwise the whole system can be damaged.
